Ovarian Endometriosis

What is Ovarian Endometriosis?

Ovarian endometriosis happens when tissue-lining (like the innermost layer of the uterus of a woman) grows in the ovary. It would be forming a blood-filled cyst called an endometrioma commonly known as a chocolate cyst. This will cause acute painful cramps irregular monthly periods, and if left untreated, it keeps increasing in size and then causes severe fertility issues. Common ovarian endometrioma symptoms are acute and regular pelvic pain and bloating. Treatment may include medical therapy or surgery.

What Are Ovarian Endometriosis Symptoms? Know the Alarming Signs!

Painful endometriosis ovarian cysts, also called endometriomas, give the resulting issues and symptoms. These symptoms often go ignored but can silently damage fertility and health.

Watch out for these scary signs:

Chronic lower belly or back pain
Painful periods that worsen over time
Sharp pain during sex
Pain while passing urine or stool during periods
Difficulty getting pregnant
Severe acute pain if the cyst goes into torsion

How Doctors Detect Ovarian Endometriosis

Shockingly, over 50% of women with infertility may have undiagnosed ovarian endometriosis. Many go 7–10 years without a proper diagnosis, as symptoms often mimic other conditions. Timely screening is vital.

Doctors detect it through:

Pelvic ultrasound to spot endometriosis ovarian cysts
Symptom review and menstrual history
MRI for detailed imaging

Ovarian Endometriosis Treatment and Recovery

If you experience any of these ovarian endometrioma symptoms, early ovarian endometrioma treatment is critical. Left unchecked, this ovarian cyst endometrioma can burst, twist or harm fertility.  Treatment under a good Endometriosis specialist like Dr Atishay Jain includes hormonal therapy to shrink cysts when they are small and laparoscopic surgery to remove endometriomas when they are large and hamper fertility. Early care prevents recurrence, boosts fertility, and regular follow-ups ensure long-term control and healing.

No, while pain worsens during periods, ovarian endometrioma symptoms like dull pelvic aches or bloating may persist throughout the cycle. These do not just come up during menstruation.
An ovarian cyst may be harmless or hormonal; an endometrioma forms when endometrial tissue bleeds inside the ovary, creating a dark, blood-filled mass. Sometimes it may be difficult to differentiate between them on imaging.
Ovarian endometriosis can damage egg reserve and ovarian tissue silently. This would be, reducing your fertility over time even if ovarian endometrioma symptoms are absent or mild.
Ovarian endometrioma treatment may include hormone therapy to suppress growth, reduce pain or delay surgery. But then this won’t remove existing endometriosis ovarian cysts permanently.
